Project Description
Client: Dick Anderson Construction
Location: Yellowstone National Park
Year Completed: 2015
The National Park service ordered a $28 million dollar renovation of the historic Lake Hotel in Yellowstone National Park. Completed in 2015, the time-frame was tight and required year round work despite the park being closed, and largely inaccessible, for six months of the year. The contractor, Dick Anderson Construction, called on Simkins Hallin to provide the custom molding and millwork.
The Challenges
The park service mandated that every piece of molding and trim match the original historical profiles. Simkins Hallin Custom Millwork department took exacting measurements, and carefully cut the molder knives to match the original profiles. In all there were 20 different shapes that had to be meticulously matched.
Next, we started the production run that totaled more than 100,000 linear feet of material. That’s nearly 20 miles of trim when laid end to end. The deadline – winter weather that shuts the park roads down completely. Most of the trim was delivered as ordered and made it on location before the road closure. The last of the order, placed after the road closures, had to be hauled in with large track vehicles.
Checking on our products throughout the winter required a full day’s journey by trucks and on snowmobile. Installers stayed in the park over the winter months and had almost everything installed by the spring thaw.
