The new Ophir Elementary school addition in Big Sky Montana.
The Challenges
School construction has it’s own unique challenges and that extends to the trusses used. The massive sizes often require multiple trusses be used to complete a single span. In the case of the new elementary school in Big Sky, these truss systems also needed to be designed with large equipment and manway chases. A combination of truss styles were used, from massive mono trusses to small common trusses, to a hip roof system over some entryways.
In all, this project required a total of 914 trusses with 109 different designs. All this under a code that required the trusses be designed with a 126 pounds per sq. ft. for snow load. These trusses were hauled up the scenic Gallatin River byway, a narrow winding road that follows the Gallatin River up to the 6,100 foot elevation of the school site.
Was extra time taken knowing the trusses would be the critical roof system over generations of Big Sky students? You bet. But all Simkins Hallin trusses meet stringent standards. In fact, we shoot for 1/32 inch tolerances and our manufacturing plant is verified by outside inspection agencies several times each year.
